Hi Everyone,
Well the summer is finally here and before you know it we’ll be on the football field.
Groton-Dunstable Youth Football is looking forward to starting another successful and fun filled football season. This is our 5th season since we started the program and this is our biggest number of football registrations!
The success of our program would not be possible without all of the people who volunteer and all of the parents who support their kids and our program – THANK YOU!
As you all know we’ll be forming teams by GRADE this year and as if stands right now we’ll have a team at all grade levels but could use some help building a larger 7th grade team.
We currently have fourteen 7th graders registered and thirty four 6th graders! We’re looking for a few of the 6th graders to move up. This would help with 7th grade team and would allow for increased PLAYING TIME for everyone.
Managing the playing time for 34 kids (6th graders) is too much and splitting the team in two would be very difficult. Kids who opt to move up will see a marked increase in playing time.
The purpose of GD youth football is to develop the abilities of all the kids in our program. For some, playing with older kids could be an effective way of accelerating their development. Some tend to the play to the level of the players around them so by playing with more advanced players, they advance themselves. They will get more playing time in games but more importantly they will be interacting every day in practice with more advanced players who in all likelihood have a better and more mature understanding of the mental aspects of the game.
Of course playing up is not the right move for every child. We do not want to put any players at risk. Players who are smaller in size than average may not want to take on the physical challenges of playing up. But if your son is average to above average size, and is competitive and the type of child who enjoys being challenged, then there may be advantages to him moving up a level.
Please send an email to the board or call me if you’re a parent of a 6th grader and want to discuss whether having your son move up to the 7th grade is the right move for your son. It is ultimately your decision not ours, but I am happy to discuss pros and cons with respect to any particular player in our program. The coaches will evaluate those that decide to move up to make sure this is the correct move for your son.
